ACTING CLASSES

Our acting classes are schedule-friendly and are ideal for actors at different stages of their acting journey and/or working professionals looking to advance their game on their favorite "second job" but don't have the time to commit to a 2 year program.

The formal Meisner Technique Training is a 2 year program utilizing Sandy Meisner's foundational exercises in a brick by brick format working on specific aspects that make a GOOD actor.  What is a good Actor?  What is good Acting?  A good Actor is a believable actor.  Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.

We at Neighborhood Acting Studio have synthesized the formal training into three sections and specially crafted to be taken separately.  It is recommended that the series of courses be taken in the same order as in the formal Meisner Technique training.  Additionally, the accelerated course have less in-class practice time that is naturally built-in the formal 2 year training - hence why it is a 2-year long commitment.  Practice is a critical part of the Actor's training and therefore our Meisner Technique Accelerated Course requires enrollment in our Actor's Gym.

THE MEISNER TECHNIQUE

ADULT
"YEAR ONE" FOUNDATIONS - ACTIVE LISTENING & REACTION

ALL LEVELS

The Meisner Technique was developed by Sanford (Sandy) Meisner as a way to teach actors to "live truthfully under imaginary circumstances" using a series of foundational exercises that build upon the other.  These interrelated exercises provide a proven framework to help actors "get out of their heads" and into their gut and help them focus on the core elements needed to act truthfully and be believable.

This class specifically focuses on Listening and going "from the gut" using foundational exercises such as the Repetition Exercise, Activity, Knock and Activity.  Students will learn how to "stay in the moment," become less self-conscious of the words to say, and learn to trust.

Being able to listen and react truthfully is the foundation that will provide the actor a solid base and technique that allows the actor to be fully present leading to more freedom and confidence to express "themselves" within imaginary circumstances.

Being present is how the actor learns to access their emotions without manipulation or imitation and will help the actor develop an intuitive and keen awareness of "who they are" both emotionally and physically for instinctive and effective utilization of these aspects.

Acting is not imitation, but rather, a genuinely deep and truthful connection.  Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.  To do this, the actor must be present and listen.
